All dog lovers will fall hard for this short and sweet family tale, but it will be especially meaningful for fans of Ann Cameron’s long-running series. We first met the fictional Bates family back in 1981 in The Stories Julian Tells; over the years, we’ve gotten to know them through books narrated by Julian as well as others told in the voices of Julian’s little brother Huey and his best friend Gloria. But no one knows a family like a pet, as we learn when the Bates’s family dog Spunky Tells All (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, $15.99). “Julian smells of broccoli,” Spunky confides early on. “That’s not because he eats it. It’s because he hides it in his pockets when Michelle serves it for dinner.” Spunky will make you wonder what your dog is thinking. Even better, he’ll make you want to revisit all of Ann Cameron’s excellent books.  Ages 7-9.  – Elizabeth Sher

Book Cover Blast from the Past
(20% off for Members through June 20)
Life for seven-year-old Julian is far from ordinary. Thanks to his big imagination, The Stories Julian Tells (Random House, $4.99) are full of magic and wonder, so much so that he often begins to believe them himself. When he tells his little brother Huey that a plant catalog is a book used to order special cats who help with gardening tasks, Julian dreams of really seeing them one day. Upon receiving a young fig tree as a birthday gift, he begins to eat its leaves after convincing himself that they will make him grow tall and strong. This effervescent boy and his new friend Gloria are winsome, relatable characters who continue to bring joy to young readers after more than 30 years in print.  Ages 6-8. – Janet Minichiello
