Going Places with P&P

Several years ago, a longtime customer came to us with an idea: Could she and her business partner design and lead specially-curated trips to Paris for small groups of Politics & Prose customers? The customer, Sheila Campbell, and her associate, Donna Morris, were experts on Paris and all things French, so we were game to give the idea a try. But we never imagined how quickly trips to Paris and southern France would routinely sell out, win rave reviews from customers, and create demand for even more P&P-sponsored travel opportunities with Sheila and Donna.

We’re happy to announce that Sheila and Donna are adding new destinations for 2016 along with a customized trip offering, “Together in Paris,” tailored for small groups. Especially enticing this year is a new trip to the chateaus of the Loire Valley from April 24 through April 29. Travelers will be based in Tours and take day trips to different chateaus, with the option of a three-day extension to Paris at the end.

If Italy is on your bucket list, you can join Sheila and Donna for another new P&P journey they will be leading—this one to Tuscany and its magnificent hill towns, from October 30 through November 5.

For a twist on the Tuscany trip, you might consider our week-long writers’ retreat based at the spectacular Castello di Spannocchia in the Tuscan countryside, a 16th-century hilltop villa and working organic farm. Susan Coll, director of events and programs at P&P and an accomplished novelist herself, will lead morning writing workshops for those who want to refine their writing skills (while non-writers can use the time to read, wander the grounds, or pursue other activities). In the afternoons, Sheila and Donna will lead tours to nearby towns, cathedrals, and other favorite Tuscan attractions.

This year we’re also delighted to offer our first ever trip to Cuba, led by Baltimore-based writer Wil Hylton, from March 25 to April 1. Hylton is an expert on Cuba and its history, including the 19th century War of Independence from Spain and the 20th century Communist Revolution, led by Fidel Castro. He is currently working on a book about the Spanish American War, and the itinerary for this trip was designed exclusively for P&P with Hylton’s guidance. The journey will retrace the paths of revolution while also deepening understanding of Cuba today. Only a few spots are still available, so if you’re interested, please sign up as soon as you can.

Lastly, our travel program in 2016 will include another perennial favorite: a writing retreat with author Phyllis Theroux at Bishop’s Ranch in Sonoma County, California. Phyllis is a popular presence at P&P, both as an author and as an instructor of journaling classes that always sell out. In addition to her tutelage, travelers will enjoy five days in a spectacular setting in the wine country, the perfect locale for reading, writing, and thinking. The trip runs from April 10 to April 15.
