Join Politics & Prose, and journalist, author, and horticulture expert Lucinda Fleeson, for a day trip to the world’s largest indoor flower show, preceded by a waterfront lunch at the Philadelphia Chart House. This year, the Philadelphia Convention Center will be turned into a slice of Hawaii. Visitors will enter through a giant wave of orchids and towering waterfalls. Showcase gardens will highlight the flowers, plants, stories, art and culture of Hawaii’s six big islands. The show is designed for gardeners of all levels, as well as non-gardeners who will enjoy attractions that include lectures and demonstrations on topics such as lei-making and quilting.

Click here for more information about the show.

The morning will begin at the store at 8 a.m. with coffee and pastries. The bus will depart from Politics & Prose promptly at 8:30, and will go directly to the Chart House. After lunch, we will head to the convention center, where participants will have approximately three hours to either explore on their own, or stay with others from P&P. (And yes, there is room on the bus for your purchases!)

Lucinda Fleeson, a longtime Philadelphia Inquirer journalist, has written extensively about the flower show, and spent two years living in Hawaii and working at the National Tropical Botanical Garden. She turned her experience into a memoir: Waking up in Eden. She now lives in Washington, DC, and directs a program for international journalists at University of Maryland College of Journalism. Most recently she was a Fullbright Scholar in Sri Lanka, where she helped establish a new training program for regional journalists. Lucinda will be with us to answer questions about the flower show as we travel to and from Philadelphia, and she will be happy to discuss her book, as well.

Lucinda’s book, Waking up in Eden (Algonquin, $13.95), is available to trip registrants at a 20% discount. Participants are also welcome to choose one additional gardening book at the same discount from our on-hand inventory. Click here to see some options online, or stop in the store to see our full selection!

Price: $150 (includes *lunch, transportation, and flower show entrance).

*When registering, please choose one entree: Pasta Primavera, Grilled Atlantic Salmon, or Chicken Romano.
