Rebecca Stead, Jerry Pinkney, and Libba Bray Win Newbery, Caldecott, and Printz Awards
One of the most anticipated days of the year in the Children
and Teens’ Department is the announcement of the American Library Association
awards at the group’s midwinter conference.
We come in early to gather around the computer, fingers crossed, hoping
to cheer our favorites as winners. This
year, we did quite a bit of cheering. A
number of the award winners are featured in the Children
and Teens’ Department 2009 Favorite Books , and others are favorites to hand sell.

more bewildering when she receives an enigmatic note: “I am coming to
save your friend’s life, and my own.” But her best friend has cut her
off, and making new friends is proving difficult. The anonymous,

Jerry Pinkney ’s retelling of Aesop’s fable, THE LION AND THE MOUSE
(Little Brown, $16.99) captivates the imagination and holds the eye.
On the cover, a lion’s eyes direct attention to the back cover where a
mouse returns the beast’s gaze. Slip the jacket off and the title of
the book is revealed in pictures. Such is the thoughtful detail in this
tale of a tiny mouse who repays an unexpected act of kindness with a
brave deed. Told entirely through pencil and watercolor art, with only
the occasional sounds of the animals added to enhance the story,
Pinkney’s insightful portrayal of nature and animals makes this one of
the finest picture books ever created. All Ages - Mary Alice Garber
